Earthquake damage

The quake caused damage to buildings in several cities in Morocco, especially Marrakech and Agadir. Several buildings collapsed in the medina of Marrakech. We keep getting images of collapsed houses, torn roads and panicky people. The official death toll stood at 820 at around 3 a.m. Dutch time. According to the National Institute of Geophysics (ING), the earthquake occurred at 11:11 p.m. local time, at a depth of 8 kilometers, in the municipality of Ighil in Al Haouz province. ING published an emergency alert in collaboration with the National Center for Scientific and Technical Research (CNRST).

Earthquake Epicenter

The earthquake was felt in several regions of the country, including Kenitra, Rabat, Mohammedia, Casablanca, Marrakech, Agadir, Essaouira, Tiznit and Guelmim.

A first aftershock was registered 20 minutes later about 30 km south of Casablanca and had a magnitude of 4.8. Shortly afterwards, a second aftershock followed in the Marrakech region with a magnitude of 3.3. Many people ran from their homes in panic, fearing collapses or more aftershocks.

Earthquake area

Local press currently speaks of 2,681 deaths, 1,452 in Al Haouz, 764 in Taroudant, 202 in Chichaoua, 31 in Ouarzazate and 18 in Marrakech, 11 in Azillal, 5 in Agadir and three in Casablanca. And these have just been officially confirmed by the authorities.

Security forces have been deployed en masse to secure the affected areas and assist emergency services in rescue operations. The emergency department of the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Marrakech is overwhelmed by victims. According to a medical source, the situation is "serious".

In Moulay Ibrahim, near Marrakech, people lie under the rubble. Volunteers are still trying to rescue the victims, while authorities are being called on to provide swift assistance to the affected citizens. Other videos and photos on social media show cracked walls, crumbling ceilings and fallen objects in some homes and shops.

Earlier in the evening, international seismological observatories recorded another strong earthquake in several parts of Morocco. It is not yet clear whether this earthquake is related to the later earthquake in Al Haouz.

Earthquake areaMorocco is located in a seismically active area and is regularly affected by earthquakes, especially in the north of the country. However, Friday's earthquake is the strongest ever recorded in the country, causing panic across the country.

The last major earthquake in Morocco was in Al Hoceima in 2004. It had a magnitude of 6.3 degrees on the Richter scale. There were 628 deaths. The most devastating earthquake occurred in 1960, when a magnitude 5.7 quake devastated the city of Agadir and killed more than 15,000 people.

Authorities have called on the population to remain calm and follow the instructions of emergency services. The king has expressed his condolences to the victims and their families.
